Hotels in Nepal

Nepal's hotels on our site are in the Kathmandu Valley, where nearly every visit to the country begins and ends. Kathmandu is the place to recover from the flight, sort out trekking plans and permits, and explore temples and royal squares that have been at the heart of Himalayan culture for centuries.

We list each hotel by area, from busy Thamel to quieter Patan, Boudha and the streets around Swayambhu, so you can compare places side by side. The Kathmandu guide explains which neighbourhood suits which kind of trip.

Planning a trip to Nepal

When to go

Autumn, roughly October and November, is the classic season, with clear skies and settled trekking weather. Spring, from March to May, is the second peak, known for rhododendrons in bloom. The monsoon from about June to September brings heavy rain and can disrupt mountain roads and flights.

Trekking

Most popular trekking regions require permits, and rules introduced in 2023 mean many foreign trekkers must now walk with a licensed guide. Agencies in Thamel can arrange guides and paperwork. Ascend gradually and learn the signs of altitude sickness before heading high.

Getting around

Tourist buses and domestic flights link Kathmandu with Pokhara and Chitwan. Mountain roads are slow and flights to remote airstrips depend on the weather, so build spare days into your plans.

Money and connectivity

ATMs are easy to find in Kathmandu and Pokhara but scarce on most trekking routes, so carry enough cash in Nepalese rupees before heading into the hills. Local SIM cards with data are cheap and widely sold in the city.

Before you go

Visa rules and fees change. Check the Nepal Department of Immigration and the UK government's foreign travel advice on gov.uk, or your own country's equivalent, before you book.

Questions about staying in Nepal

How many nights should I spend in Kathmandu?

Two or three nights is enough to see the main squares and stupas. Add a night or two either side of a trek, as mountain flights and roads are often delayed by weather.

Can I leave luggage in Kathmandu while trekking?

Many hotels and hostels in the city offer luggage storage for guests heading into the mountains; check the details on the listing or with the property.

Is Thamel or Patan better for a first visit?

Thamel is the more practical base, with trekking shops, agencies and restaurants on every corner. Patan is calmer and has some of the valley's finest architecture, so it suits travellers who want to spend more time sightseeing than preparing for a trek.

Do you take bookings?

No. We compare hotels and link to booking partners, where you check live prices and book directly with them.
